History

The inspiration for our project came from several places. First, The average person does not get the right amount of sleep for their age during the week. After looking at a charts of what doctor say are the suggested amounts of sleep, many students are surprised to see that they don’t even get close to enough sleep on a regular weekday. *1  This information inspired us to create a product, but we were unsure where to start.

Luckily, something had already been created similar to our basic idea:”Since you move differently in bed during the different phases, Sleep Cycle uses the accelerometer in your iPhone to monitor your movement to determine which sleep phase you are in. Waking up in the lightest sleep phase feels like waking without an alarm clock – it is a natural way to wake up where you feel rested and relaxed.” *2 This sleep cycle product was what we wanted to be but it had a few problems. Many users don’t like the possibility of having their iPhone, constantly giving off radiation, next to their head every night. Plus it has to be plugged in while in use, so it could be hard to get an outlet near a bed. That is where we figured out our position. We decided to create a product that would solve the same problem but fix these issues as well.

Team

Gabe- Gabe is very good on getting his work done on time so that the group can move on to the next step. Additionally, Gabe is very creative and always has new ideas which creates a positive atmosphere as well as allows for the team to constantly improve upon the device. Gabe is also very focused once given a task to complete, and stays very focused until the task is fully completed. Gabe is also very good at soldering which has allowed for the progression of that crucial component of the project.

Jacob- The name Jacob is associated with many things in our small Sci-Tech class. First he is always on top of work and understands it, and he evens makes sure his partners and teachers understand. He is amazing at coding in Arduino, and Jacob always participates and puts forth great ideas constantly. It is these qualities that help the group move forward with total knowledge and great success.

Sandy- Sandy is a great team manager. She is always on top of her tasks and she gets her workdone. Sandy is extremely organized which is important especially when programing and designing. Any small part or line of code that is out of place could restrict our progress. Having her skills in addition to the rest of our team, we will hopefully succeed our goals within our deadline. Sandy is also a great moderator. If there are any disputes about what to include or what not to, she could be the deciding vote. Lastly, her drawing and writing abilities will be very useful in creating great progress reports.

Problem

The average person does not get the right amount of sleep for their age during the week. After looking at charts of what doctor say are the suggested amounts of sleep, many students are surprised to see that they don’t even get close to enough sleep on a regular weekday. Sometimes, students aren’t even aware that their lack of sleep is hurting their body, or even the fact they are not receiving sufficient sleep. Students lack the motivation or money needed to buy equipment that will measure their sleep.

While people fall asleep, they have no way of knowing what time they actually fell asleep. They could be in bed and awake but not know how long it has been. Also, in the morning, they do not know what time they fell asleep. The average adult takes about fourteen minutes to fall asleep but it varies depending on many variables including how they slept the night before. Sometimes people could be awake moving around in bed even for hours without knowing the next day. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up in the morning and see the exact that you fell asleep? Additionally, wouldn't it be great if you could see if or how many times you woke up in the middle of the night?

Waking up in the mooring for school is incredibly hard, especially for teenagers. The amount and quality of sleep has a great affect on this but it also has to do with the cycle you are in when you wake up. Sleep is prompted by cycles of activity in the brain. There are two basic states: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. This information can be displayed on a graph called a hypnogram. If when you wake up, you are in a deep NREM state, it make it harder to wake up and your day could be ruined before it even begins. On the other hand, waking up when you are in the REM state versus waking up in a deep NREM state, you will have more energy throughout the whole day.

Idea Description

We shall create a box that will have a motion sensor, clock, Arduino, and an LCD display. We shall also create a program using Arduino to read the motion and create a number sequence and to generate a sleep quality rating and length. We shall even use the Arduino with the clock to display the current time. The entire project will be encased in a 3D print box which we shall design. We shall create a product that will have a place in the back for power and a place in the front to plug in the motions sensor. Lastly, we shall create a program using Processing and Java that will read the number sequence and display a graph that will include information about one's nighty sleep.

Materials List

  • A box

  • Motion sensor

Deliverable

We will create a box that will have a motion sensor, clock, Arduino, and an LCD display. We will create a program using Arduino to read the motion and create a number sequence and to generate a sleep quality rating and length. We will also use the Arduino with the clock to display the current time. The entire project will be encased in a 3D print box and will have place in the back for power and place in the front to plug in the motions sensor. Lastly, we will create a program using Processing and Java that will read the number sequence and display a graph that will include information about how you slept. This program will be able to store graphs up to a week back and it will keep an ongoing average of sleep length and quality. We will tests all of our components individual and in small groups by bringing them home and testing to see if thy work in our own beds. Ounce we have completed each component we will put them all together and begin testing and fixing any flaws that should arise.

Conclusion

Thus, our product would solve the same problem as the sleep cycle but fix the sleep cycle's issues as well. It will be completely revolutionary for sleep and help people of all ages be able to benefit the most from their nightly sleep. Additionally, it will allow people to become aware if they're not getting enough sleep, therefore encouraging them to get more sleep if they are not sleeping a sufficient amount. Clearly, humans have a problem with sleep, and this will solve the problem.
